Way to warm you up on a cold day. Don't forget the marshmallows! Also, REST is the most important part of weight loss! If your cortisol is too high, you'll store fat. Radio Naturopath Episode 195: Rest Is Good For You, Good Stuff: Potatoes and Yacon Syrup

I want to remind people to slow down and enjoy the holiday season, not just do everything and anything! Meditate, read, relax, listen to music, go for a stroll. Watch the HALLMARK CHANNEL.  Get your negative ions and go out in nature! Also, POTATOES can be your friend. They have resistant starch to help blood sugar, potassium to calm you down, and their skins have lots of antioxidants to prevent tissue damage in your body! The darker the potato, the more antioxidants, just like berries. So grab those purple potatoes! Also, more on yacon syrup: that molasses-like syrup from that starchy tuber that can help with weight loss.

Radio Naturopath Episode 191: NHAND Conference 2018 Highlights: Menopause, Holistic Dentistry, Adrenals

I just got back from the NHAND (New Hampshire Association of Naturopathic Doctors Conference) 2018, and as usual learned lots of stuff. Today I focused on Dr. Robin DiPasquale's discussion of menopause: help from the gemmotherapies vaccinium, rosemary and dogwood; help for hot flashes; Dr. Thom's discussion of holistic dentistry, including whether fluoride is good for you, disrupting plaque, and taking out amalgam fillings. Also, don't just treat the thyroid, treat the adrenals!

Radio Naturopath Episode 190: Happy Halloween! Halloween Candy? Should You Go To Extremes?

I talked about a brief history of Halloween, how it was taken from the Celtic Pagan holiday of Samhain, the new year. On this day it was thought that the veils between the living and dead were the thinnest and you could communicate with your loved ones in the beyond. When the Christians came, in order to get more adherents, the Christians allowed the Pagans to incorporate their traditions into Christianity, and blended All Saints and All Souls Day with Halloween, the even of All Saints Day. The costumes and commercialization are, well, about making money. It's celebrated this way here in the US and on the British isles.

Also, Halloween candy. Should you eat it? Ways to preserve your teeth if you indulge! And, we take on the topic of going to extremes: dieting, exercise, any sort of program.

Radio Naturopath Episode 189: Colds and Flus 2018; Why Leafy Greens Are Good

I have been seeing so many people coming in with colds and coughs and sinus infections. Some of them come and tell me they're getting over the infections, and went to the MD who gave them antibiotics, steroid inhalers or nasal sprays, a course of prednisone, and/or a decongestant. I tell them next time, come see me! There is so much that naturopathic physicians can do help to prevent and treat coughs, colds, and flu that don't involve immunosuppressive steroids and decongestants. Neti pots, xylitol/saline nasal spray, gargling, washing your hands are all really important. There are great herbs and vitamins that can help too! Also, I talk about why leafy greens are so great. Did you know that cabbage and sauerkraut can prevent esophageal cancer? I LOVE sauerkraut! And it's vegan!
