Radio Naturopath Episode 184: Materia Medica vs. Repertory; Ovarian Cysts: What, Why, How to Treat
Today we talk a little more about homeopathy, and compare the Materia Medica to the Repertory. Materia Medica lists all the homeopathic remedies alphabetically and what they do, whereas the Repertory gives you every possible symptom there could be and tells you what remedies will help it. Both very useful tools in homeopathy! Also, all about ovarian cysts (OWW), what they are, why they happen, and how to treat them.
Radio Naturopath Episode 183: Hydration and Staying Healthy in the Heat, Salt and Health, Boxers for Fertility, DHEA
It was REALLY HOT, so I gave good counsel on what to look for in terms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. It's OK to get out of the heat! Also, drink a lot, maybe with a little salt and sugar to port the fluid into your system. This led to a discussion on the healthy use of salt. It's OK! Plus, boxers vs. briefs for male fertility, exercise improves your mental health, and the health benefits of the great over-the-counter hormone, DHEA!
Bicycle Talk Episode 112: Why You Should Stretch; The Awesome Steeple Chase Bike Tour; Check Your Cables; 8 Great Cross-Training Sports for Cyclists
I talk about why cyclists need to STRETCH: realign those muscles! The Positive Side is about how great the Steeple Chase Bike Tour was. The Maintenance Minute: check, adjust, and replace your cables BEFORE they break! And, 8 great sports for cross-training for cyclists.
Radio Naturopath Episode 182: Like Cures Like and Healing Eczema Naturally!
This week our basic naturopathic principle is taken from homeopathy, which is Like Cures Like. It's that idea that if you use something in a material dose it will cause symptoms, but if you dilute it and potentize it, it will help to heal the symptoms caused by the material substance. Like if you get poison ivy, you'll get an itchy rash that is better from hot water and sore joints also better from heat. If you dilute and potentize a mother tincture so that there's way less than a molecule of substance, the resultant remedy can heal the symptoms it would have caused in a material dose! Also, we had a question about eczema and food intolerances, so we discuss how changing your diet can help; also getting the right probiotics, helpful topical herbs, and helping to reduce aggravating bacteria on the skin.
Bicycle Talk Episode 111: Vote; Lawson Craddock and Alkek; Check your Tires; Steeple Chase Bike Tour 2018
Ron is doing Sun stuff, so I'm up this week. Some basic stuff: Cyclists should vote. Lawson Craddock, who finished last in the Tour de France, raised much funds for the Alkek Velodrome in Houston, TX! Also, CHECK YOUR TIRES for wear, cuts, peeling, and either fix or replace them. But the HIGHLIGHT: I interviewed Victoria Nimorowski, the director of the Windham Area Interfaith Ministry, and Paula Shepherd, board member of the Windham No Freeze Project, about their current, very important project: the STEEPLE CHASE BIKE TOUR! It's this Saturday, August 18, 2018, and you can ride 5, 20, 35, 50, 62.5, or 100 miles. A little fee and donation and you're on your way to gorgeous roads and supporting some great causes!
Radio Naturopath Episode 181: Hering's Law of Cure and How to Raise Testosterone, Naturally!
Today it's all about Hering's Law. It's a law in homeopathy that talks about healing occurring from the inside to outside, from top to bottom, and from most important to least important organs. It's related to Treat the Cause. The idea is that if you treat a condition externally, you'll only palliate it and may even suppress it so that it can go deeper into the body. If you're eating a food that's causing intestinal inflammation, and therefore giving you eczema, it's better to stop eating the food, heal the gut with rest and herbs and supplements and food than it is to just put some steroid cream on the eczema! From the top down: that's about healing the BRAIN, which can be the biggest obstacle to cure!
I also talk about how men can raise their testosterone naturally. Exercise, good diet, fat loss, eating good quality fat, some herbs can all help!
Radio Naturopath Episode 180: Removing Obstacles to Cure, The Healing of the Knee, and MENOPAUSE: HOT FLASH REDUX
This week: we talk about Removing Obstacles to Cure! An important naturopathic principle. Why give you tummy tonics when what you really need to do is simply stop eating dairy? Removing those obstacles can be hard if they're very habitual, but well worth considering and of course, doing. We celebrate the Healing of the Knee, my right one, and how it happened. Ron thinks the most important element was Patience, that I didn't return to pushing too hard with exercise too soon. And all the other stuff, like acupuncture and chiropractic! And, for we menopausal women, a review of how to get less of those pesky hot flashes. Soy is OK! So is evening primrose oil and black cohosh.
Radio Naturopath Episode 179: Prevention in Health, Lichen Sclerosus, Healthy Produce
This week we talk about PREVENTION, the 6th basic principle of naturopathic medicine. You want to try to prevent an illness before it occurs! So you look at a person's medical history, family history, environment, resources. You also want to make sure that the person lives in an healthy environment, and that there are COMMUNITY and WORLD resources so that person can be outdoors, eat good food, exercise, and reduce their stress. Prevention is about the personal and also about the community!
I also talk about lichen sclerosus, an inflammatory skin condition that mostly happens to menopausal women. I've seen a rash (!!) of cases lately! There are some conventional and natural ways to treat it.
Also a good reminder to eat that summer produce!
Bicycle Talk Episode 109: Riding with Souplesse and Finesse and Getting Mad Skills; TCC Century; High Intensity Intervals for Performance, Health and Weight!
Ron is away so today I talked about bicycles! My Frant was about speed over finesse,. fast over souplesse! It's all about the beauty and grace of riding a bicycle. You can go fast with souplesse, but a lot of people don't. I encourage people to work on their skills and simply enjoy the pleasure of being on a bicycle! I also shouted out to the Thread City Cyclers for putting on a great organized ride event this weekend! And, I talked about bicycling and fitness. If you want to lose weight, have a buff body, and have energy, riding too many miles all the time is not the way to get there. However, cutting back on quantity for quality (there's that theme again) is the way to go! Doing short burst intervals, a couple of days of rest or easy rides, and one long ride of 40-60 miles/week will help to get you there.
Radio Naturopath Episode 178: Interview with Joe Serrenho and John Norton: Clean Living and Mental Health
Today I had two guests, Joe Serrenho and John Norton. They have their own podcast. Go Health Yourself, which in itself is a great name! They are two young men in their early 30's dealing with depression and mental illness, and they talk about how healthy living helps them to manage their depression. They are also both gearheads and interested in bicycling, motorbikes and active sports. John is a C5-6 quadriplegic! And he's amazingly fit nonetheless! He broke his spine falling out of a tree. So he talks about how he manages his health with his challenges. They were both very inspiring! And Ron is going to figure out a way to PUT JOHN ON A TANDEM!!! Woo-hoo! And Joe talked about the Elephant in the Room, which is that PEOPLE JUST DON'T CONNECT. He is hopeful that we can all learn to have more meaningful connections with ourselves, each other, and the world!
So, healthy living, eating well and exercise help with mental illness!
