Radio Naturopath Episode 537: Treating Lyme Disease AGAIN: Herbs, Probiotics, Nerve Health
This week, I talked about having accepted that yep, I have active Lyme disease again, and how I'm treating it. Amoxicillin to take the top off, all kinds of Buhner herbs to fight Lyme and coinfections, and probiotics to keep my immune system healthy and to replace what the antibiotics are killing. Gentle exercise, no cycling , and rest rest rest. As I'm sitting here typing this I can see my bike club riding past my house on the way back from a ride I was suppose to be on. Well, I will keep treating and hope that I feel well enough to ride in a few weeks!
Radio Naturopath Episode 466: Managing Fatigue, Intermittent Claudication, Peripheral Artery Disease, Chromium
This week, I talked a bit about how I manage intermittent fatigue, mostly with taking breaks and getting enough sleep! Like a lot of us, I'm guilty of pushing myself to get stuff done until I drop, and I need to learn to rest more.
Then we discussed the possibility that Ron has intermittent claudication, a form of peripheral artery disease. He certainly has symptoms that could fit. We discussed the mechanics of intermittent claudication, the pain, cramping, and burning that are worse with exertion and better with rest. Then we discussed how it's diagnosed and treated, both conventionally and naturally. And then, a little piece on chromium for food cravings!
Radio Naturopath Episode 419: Long COVID and Low Serotonin, Weight Loss Surgery
This week, I talked about a study that came out suggesting that people with long COVID may have viral remnants, or even actual virus, in their guts, and this is preventing them from making adequate serotonin. Inadequate serotonin leads to mood disorders, poor digestion, pain, migraines, and all sorts of other issues! i suggested some naturopathic fixes for this.
Then we started on weight loss topics. beginning with the nature and effects of weight loss surgery. I'd rather people didn't do it but sometimes it can be a good choice!
Radio Naturopath Episode 392: Overdoing It; Statins, Side Effects, Anti-Inflammatory Alternatives
We talked about how it can be easy to overdo it when the weather gets nice all of a sudden. Make hay while the sun shines, right? We get really industrious and want to take care of our WHOLE yard. Or we go from riding one hour at a time on our indoor bike trainer to riding 62 MILES. And then we wonder why we're sore all over, hurt our back, or are super exhausted! It's OK to take it easy and ease into the outdoor joys of the season.
We also continued our series on cardiovascular health. Today we focused on statin drugs: how they work, their side effects, and how to reduce inflammation in other ways. Cardiovascular health is a very rich topic so we'll be getting into this for a few more weeks!
Radio Naturopath Episode 373: The Pros and Cons of Sugar
This week we talked about SUGAR, because the eating season has started! Mmmm, Halloween candy. And now Thanksgiving is upon us and it's officially the holiday season. Sirius XM already has its holiday channels playing! So, we talked about the pros and cons of sugar. I've come to the conclusion that if you deprive people completely of sweets, they will crave them and want to eat more. Even people on ketogenic diets have chocolatey goodies with sugar alcohols in them! However, if you eat too much sugar, it can lead to various illnesses, ranging from fatigue and mood disorders, to acne, to heart disease and cancer! So, of course, moderation is key.
